Monthly Exhibitions
At the Highland Art Center our commitment to promoting professional artists, celebrating emerging artists, and investing in the careers of our local member artists is best seen in the yearly line up of shows we curate.
From the Annual Scholarship Auction and Juried Shows where we financially invest in the award winners, to the Young Artists Showcase where we display the work of local elementary school students.
The exhibits at the Highland Art Center are always community focused, visually intriguing, and professionally presented. Enjoy perusing the roster of our upcoming monthly shows and be sure to join us for the Weaverville Art Cruise on the first Saturday of every month between 5 and 8 pm, where we will host the opening reception for each exhibit including refreshments and a meet and greet with the artists.

We are pleased to exhibit a trio of Hayfork's talented artists:
Beth Ferreter
Angel McMorrow
Chris Semer
A diverse collection of pottery and fine art from these three Hayfork artists specialising in keepsakes and collectables just in time for holiday decorating and gift giving. This talented trio has deep roots in the Hayfork community with an unending love for creative expression – which is reflected in their work.
Beth Ferreter – “I am interested in exploring both reality and fantasy and that strange space in which they mingle, the magic of ordinary life…I always keep a sketchbook – a stream of conscious exploration. I draw, paint, carve, photograph, and sculpt…My work comes from an experimental mindset in which I am always wondering “what if”.”
Angel McMorrow – “As a multi-media artist, I explore many styles and mediums to celebrate nature and wildlife. I enjoy the diversity and characteristics of most mediums, like clays ability to transform and texture, and the pictures I draw are the things we see everyday, things I hope to see, or to memorialize things we may not see again. My goal as an artist is to is to start a conversation, inspire and teach others.”
Chris Semer – “I create Art primarily for myself, but in addition I feel that the more people are engaged in some artistic endeavor the better people they are – and by extension the better society is as a whole. Fostering artistic activities improves our society both locally and nationally.”

We are pleased to announce our juror this year is folk artist and pastel painter - Teri Sloat. You may remember her as she and husband Robert were our featured artists in August of 2023. Teri’s art brings her imaginative stories to life using bold, pure color and light. She is excited to contribute as a Jurist; you can meet Teri during the opening Art Walk Reception & Critique to be held on Saturday October 5th. In addition, you will experience the magic of her works as the fall lobby show will be featuring the Sloat’s art.
Teri Sloat grew up in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, a place known for inspiring creativity with its idyllic environment of evergreens, rivers and rolling hills. However, the most notable impression of time in Teri's life comes from 12 years spent on the Alaskan Yukon Delta immersed in educational programs assisting those of the Yupik Language. The beauty of the Yupik culture serves as a mainstay influence on Teri's writings, sense of storytelling and illustrations. Currently living in Northern California with her husband, artist Robert Sloat, Teri paints full time as an illustrator, plein air painter and fine artist. She has authored and illustrated 25 children's books, sells prints of her illustrations and exhibits her works in a variety of galleries in California and across the U.S.
An expert conveyor of both the representational and the imagined, Teri has a strong sense of how to impact the viewer with design elements, composition, color theory, and what she defines as an essential to her work, story telling. Narratives are Teri's forethought to lay out the foundation of her work. Teri says: "Writing has taught me to paint pictures with words; painting has taught me to tell my stories with shapes and colors and composition.... My art has always been about telling a story. Whether I am looking out at the landscape around me as I set up my easel, or glancing inward on the visual narrative spinning in my mind, I am always telling myself a story."
Important Dates:
Art deadline: Friday September 27th
Jurying: To take place on Sunday September 29, 2024
Review & Reception: An in-person review and Artist’s Reception will be part of the First Saturday Art Walk held on Saturday, October 5th at 5 PM.
Last Year’s Winners of the 39th Annual Juried Show:
Featured Artist Exhibit: Joseph O'Neil “Earth Journey”
May's exhibition of watercolors paired with crystals takes us on an exploration of abstraction in texture and mood as we travel around the gallery in "Earth Journey" a featured show of watercolor landscapes by Joseph O'Neil complimented by the exquisite crystal collection by local seller Shawn Hazeleur, specially curated for display alongside O'Neil's work here at the Highland.
Watercolor artist Joseph O’Neil’s creative expression is beautiful and esoteric with atmospheric flows of imagined winds and currents contrasted with the dynamic gestural weightiness of otherworldly landscapes. This series of work journeys into the medium with a deep dive into the mystical world of abstract landscapes in watercolor.
Alongside O'Neils work we are happy to introduce a curated assortment of crystals and other rock elements to compliment the otherworldliness and style of the show's paintings. The crystals are globally sourced and available for sale from the collection of local crystal seller Shawn Hazeleur. Displayed to coexist with the paintings, we are grateful for the collaboration to exhibit these natural sculptural elements all found somewhere around the world.
